Michael Jordan Steakhouse History
The history of Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse is quite interesting and even features some drama. In 1990, a clothing store bought the rights to use Michael Jordan’s name. The owners were Joe and Gene Silverberg. They then spent roughly $7 million dollars developing the upscale restaurant.
What’s surprising is that Jordan actually never had any ownership in the restaurant. Though he received great food for free, the LaSalle restaurant blew up in popularity. Many basketball fans would crowd around the restaurant and call to upwards of 7,000 times a day.
Here’s where things took a turn, in 1996, Gene got into a fight with Jordan over changing the restaurant. According to press, Jordan wanted to transform the restaurant to a more upscale place to dine. After the argument, in 1997, Michael Jordan opens his own restaurant in Chicago. After the Silverbergs went to the press to complain about Jordan’s abandonment, Jordan replied, “I was not obligated to go”.
In 1999, Jordan went before a judge and asked to terminate his contract with the other restaurant. After winning, Jordan also won exclusive rights to use his name. This ended the Silverbergs restaurants and were forced to close in 1999.
