If you’re planning on making sun tea, please know how long the jar should be outside. For a gallon with a few tea bags, I recommend steeping for 4 hours. Once you’ve reached the 4th hour outside, remove the tea bags and serve with lemon and more.

  • 1 gallon jar with lid


  • 16 cups filtered water
  • 4 black tea bags (1 regular sized tea bag for every cup of water)
  • 1ΒΌ cups sugar
  • Lime wedges for garnish


  • Fill the one gallon glass jar with water.
  • Add 4 family size black tea bags
  • Place lid tightly on glass container, and let sit in direct sunlight for 4-5 hours.
  • Remove from sun and pour liquid into a pot. Bring to a boil to kill bacteria.
  • Remove from heat and stir in sugar until dissolved.
  • Pour over ice and garnish with lime.
