Gluten-Free Bagels

gluten free bagels recipe banner

Gluten-free bagels are tricky to make because of their native structure and elasticity. Traditionally these bread products are made with gluten, but with celiac disease on the rise in 2023, some are looking for a healthier alternative. If you're in this category, we recommend using rice or almond flour when creating bagels. Elevate your recipe by incorporating raisins and sesame seeds.

Gluten-Free Bagel Recipe Tips

You can do a few things to improve the taste and texture of your gluten-free bagels. For example, Xanthan Gum is an ingredient that adds elasticity and binding to your baked goods. Another recipe tip for bagels is to boil them before baking to help keep their shape. It's important to note that gluten-free dough is typically stickier, which means you must let it rest so that the flour can absorb more moisture.

  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp instant yeast
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp xanthan gum helps with texture
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tbsp oil olive
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

Toppings

  • sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything bagel seasoning, etc .

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, whisk together the gluten-free flour blend, granulated sugar, instant yeast, salt, and xanthan gum (if using).
  • Mix the warm water, oil, and apple cider vinegar in a separate small bowl.
  • Combine the wet ingredients in a bowl. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and mix until just combined. The dough will be sticky.
  • Cover the bowl with an uncluttered kitchen towel and let the dough rest for about 30 minutes. During this time, preheat your home oven to 375°F (190°C) and prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  • Once the dough has relaxed, divide it into 4 to 6 equal portions (depending on how large you want your bagels) and shape each portion into a ball. Use your finger to poke a hole through the center of each ball and gently stretch it into a bagel shape.
  • In a large pot, bring water to a steaming boil. Add honey or maple syrup to the boiling water to give the bagels a slightly sweet flavor.
  • Carefully drop the bagels, one or two at a time, into the boiling water. Boil them on each side for 1-2 minutes, then remove them with a slotted spoon and put them on the prepared baking sheet.
  • If you want to add toppings, sprinkle them over the boiled bagels while they are still wet.
  • Once all the bagels are boiled and topped, bake them in the oven for about 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  • Transfer the bagels to a standard wire rack to cool completely before slicing and enjoying.
