- Preheat oven to 400°F and grease an 8-inch (20 cm) square baking pan.
- Whisk together the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if using) in a large bowl.
- Whisk together the milk, eggs, and melted butter in a separate bowl.
- Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
- Pour the smooth batter into the prepared baking pan and bake for 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Let the cornbread sit and cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving.
