Chicago's South Side experienced two bold "crash-and-grab" burglaries early Tuesday morning, prompting investigators to search for connections and the culprits behind the crimes.
The first incident, a chilling display of criminal audacity, unfolded around 3:15 am on May 14th. A Jeep, acting as a battering ram, targeted the Save Big Food Mart in the 1900 block of East 95th Street in Calumet Heights. The vehicle crashed through the store's front doors, providing the culprits with unrestricted access to the interior. The number of individuals involved and the extent of their loot are yet to be ascertained.
"We're just thankful nobody was hurt," said a spokesperson for the Save Big Food Mart who wished to remain anonymous. "We're cooperating with the police investigation and hope they catch those responsible soon."
Just two hours later, a similar scene unfolded roughly five miles away at Lyon's Beverage Express on the 9000 block of Ashland Avenue in Brainerd. In this instance, a group of offenders used an SUV to breach the liquor store's entryway before making off with stolen goods.
Adding another layer to the investigation, authorities report that the perpetrators abandoned a separate Jeep at the Brainerd crime scene before fleeing northbound in a potentially white Jeep.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either burglary, reassuring the community of their safety. Police have yet to determine if the two incidents are linked.
These 'crash-and-grab' style thefts, where vehicles are used to gain entry to a business for a quick theft, have become a growing and alarming concern in Chicago. The ease and speed with which these crimes can be committed can leave store owners and the community feeling deeply concerned and vulnerable.
