Stussy’s Diner is scheduled to open on August 6 at 3500 S. Halsted, bringing new life to a beloved neighborhood spot. The iconic Bridgeport Restaurant, known for its classic diner fare and bottomless coffee, served the community for over 70 years before closing in 2022. For two years, the diner’s vacant presence left locals wondering if another big-box store would replace their beloved eatery.
Restaurateur Erik Nance, known for Mikkey’s Retro Grill in Auburn Gresham and Chemistry Chicago in Hyde Park, along with his partner Quiana, saw an opportunity to revitalize the space while walking down 35th Street. Seeing the “For Lease” sign, they envisioned a new future for the diner—this time under a new name inspired by Nance’s daughter, Stussy, who will begin college next year. “We wanted to give our daughter something she could work for and be proud of,” says Nance. Stussy’s Diner, with its vibrant pink exterior and neon-lit interior, is not only a business venture but also a going-away present and a means to support Stussy’s college dreams.

Nance aims to honor the legacy of the original diner while introducing fresh elements. “Stussy’s brings old school and new school to the same place, all while balancing each other out,” he says. The menu will feature traditional diner favorites such as creme brulee French toast, homemade cinnamon rolls, and soufflé pancakes, alongside contemporary offerings like lattes, smoothies, and curated mocktails. But what truly sets Stussy's apart are its unique items like a chef-crafted smash burger with pink ketchup, footlong mozzarella sticks, and pizza kabobs, sure to pique your interest.
The reopening of the diner signifies more than just a new eatery; it’s a nod to Bridgeport’s rich history. In the 1960s and ’70s, South Halsted was a bustling destination for Chicagoans, offering a variety of shops and eateries. However, the closure of the stockyards in 1971 led to a decline, with many businesses shutting their doors.
Recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in revitalizing Halsted’s historic charm. New businesses like Electric Funeral, SoHappyUrHere, Tangible Books, and Bridgeport Records have joined the scene, infusing the street with new energy. Nance sees this as an exciting time for Stussy’s Diner to join the mix, especially given its proximity to the recently reopened Ramova Theatre. “Come dressed up. Come in your favorite ’60s attire. Come with your old-school skates on. Stussy’s awaits you,” he invites.
The opening of Stussy’s Diner also marks an important step for Black-owned businesses in Bridgeport, a neighborhood where such ventures have faced significant challenges. Instances of racist harassment and vandalism against Black-owned businesses have highlighted the need for greater inclusivity and support. Nance’s initiative not only signifies a positive change but also a commitment to fostering a diverse and welcoming community, where everyone feels included and valued.
Bridgeport’s demographic landscape continues to evolve, with an increasing presence of Asian-owned businesses adding to its cultural tapestry. The neighborhood now boasts a diverse array of dining options, from Lithuanian bakeries and Johnny O’s hot dogs to ramen and hot pot restaurants. Stussy’s Diner, with its blend of nostalgic and contemporary elements, is poised to become a new favorite.
“Stussy’s is located in one of the greatest neighborhoods in the world,” Nance proudly states, adding that the diner is “made for the neighborhood.” As Bridgeport continues to grow and diversify, establishments like Stussy’s are helping to shape a vibrant future while respecting the area’s storied past.
