Lula Cafe, a well-known Chicago restaurant that was honored with a James Beard Award in 2024, fell victim to a burglary recently. The break-in at the Logan Square mainstay was reported on June 30th. The perpetrators made off with a safe containing valuables, as well as other items of significant worth. The restaurant is currently working with the authorities to analyze the incident and ensure the safety and security of its premises.
According to the Chicago Police, surveillance footage captured three masked individuals entering Lula Cafe at around 4:40 am on June 30th. The footage shows the suspects using a tire iron to break through the glass doors before removing the safe.
This burglary comes just weeks after Lula Cafe received the prestigious James Beard Award for Outstanding Hospitality. The award, often referred to as the "Oscars of the food world," is a significant achievement in the culinary industry.
"Thankfully, no one was injured," stated Jason Hammel, Lula Cafe's executive chef and owner. "These incidents happen to businesses all over Chicago. While we are certainly concerned about the stolen property, our top priority is the safety of our staff."
Despite the setback, Lula Cafe remains open for business and is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. This incident has only strengthened our resolve to serve our community. Hammel expressed hope for community support, stating, "I hope we take this moment to connect as a business community and support each other."
Investigators believe the same burglary crew may be responsible for break-ins at three other Northwest side businesses on the same night. Authorities report the suspects stole cash, electronics, and safes before fleeing in a black Infiniti sedan.
Police have released surveillance footage in hopes that the public can help identify the suspects. We urge everyone to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities. Anyone with information is urged to contact Area 5 detectives at 312-746-7394.
